You have made it—the ultimate show of independence: an apartment of your own! Not just are you living on your own away from your family, but you finally have a space that is not shared and is just for you. No friends, no roommates, no one but you living in that space. Living on your own is usually considered a true mark of adulthood because you are paying all of your living expenses, all on your own.

But those expenses can add up and living by yourself can be pretty expensive. The sitcoms of our youth like Friends and How I Met Your Mother did not adequately prepare us for the size apartments are or what kind of living situations young adults can usually actually afford.

If you are living on your own, that is great! Congratulations! But likely, to cut down on costs, if you live by yourself then you will be living in a studio apartment, which comes with its own set of challenges. Read on for some tips on how to make living in a studio apartment as comfortable as possible!

Stay Organized

Studio apartments are generally pretty tight on space. The apartment can feel pretty crowded, even if everything is cleaned up and put in its rightful space, depending on how much stuff you have.

So imagine how crowded that one room will feel if you become disorganized and let things fall into disarray. Chaos, right? College life can be very busy and it can feel like life is already overwhelming with school, work, homework, and maintaining (or trying to maintain) a social life as it. Who has time to make sure that they stay really, really organized?

But mess can quickly pile up in your apartment, and the more you put it off, the easier it is to continue to push off. In the end, you will have the problem from a molehill to a mountain all on your own and then it will be hard to recover. You can’t really ignore the mess—there is no door to shut on it. You will be confronted by it every time you go home. And that can make being at home a stressful environment, and like we have discussed, college life is stressful enough on its own. If you stay on top of your organization and stay tidy, your studio apartment home will be a much happier place.

The best ways to stay organized are to stay on top of your chores, to have adequate storage spaces in your apartment, and to get rid of things you do not really use or need and that take up space. As Marie Kondo would ask, “Does it bring you joy?” If yes, you know its essential and you will take good care of it. If not, chuck it. You do not need that (or the negativity it will bring when it clutters up your studio apartment) in your life.

Create Separate Spheres

Another way to keep your sanity when living in a studio apartment is to create very clear, separate spaces in it. It can be very easy to default to letting all the different living aspects of your life spill into each other. But this can lead to problems on its own.

Let’s say that you work exclusively in your bed. This can negatively affect you in many ways. First, it can really affect your focus. You might be distracted by how comfortable your bed is and how cozy you are. You might want to take a nap or just relax because of how comfortable you are, which might make getting that homework assignment done take twice as long as it usually would. This will also affect your productivity, even if you can manage to focus. You will not be able to spread out your materials to work with for one thing. But working from your bed can also hurt your sleep cycle. Instead of being able to fall asleep when you crawl into bed, your mind will be conditioned to work instead! Your brain might have trouble shutting down and you might not be able to fall asleep. And we all know that sleep is a precious commodity for a college student.

In the end, all you can do is make the most of your space. And it is your space in the end, and only you can maintain it. Do your chores. Get rid of things you do not need. Make sure you do not work exclusively in your bed. Your studio apartment is your own little kingdom and the better you stay on top of all aspects, from cleaning, organizing, keeping separate sphere, and more, the better run your life will be and the more your little kingdom (and you) will flourish.
